Julia Carin Cavazos, professionally called Julia Michaels, released her fourth EP (extended play) album titled, Inner Monologue Pt. I, which is themed around topics of loneliness, anxiety, heartbreak, and reflection.
The EP’s last track, “What A A Time (feat. Niall Horan)” is about two people who are no longer together reflecting and reminiscing on their previous relationship status. Despite not being out of their relationship for long, the two people cannot help but nostalgically reminisce on what simpler times their relationship was.
[Verse 2: Niall Horan]“What A Time (feat. Niall Horan)” by Julia Michaels (Genuis Lyrics)
I know we didn’t end it like we’re supposed to
And now we get a bit tense
I wonder if my mind just leaves out all the bad parts
I know we didn’t make sense
I admit it that I think about it sometimes
Even though I know it’s not so distant
Oh, no, I still wanna reminisce it
The song strikes a cord of something much deeper than what can be seen on the surface. On the surface, it seems to be about a girl and boy reflecting and fantasizing about their ended relationship. However, when one takes a deeper look there’s a whole life lesson to be learned. A simple, yet profound lesson that anyone can apply in their lives.
The repeated part of the chorus “what a time, what a time, what a time” means so much more than what’s seen on the surface.
On a deeper level, the song is about reminiscing a certain time of life. It’s a nostalgic feeling that people have when they look back at certain events or people in their lives; a time that is often seen through a Romanticism lens. People only remember the good of these events or people, and can’t help but feel nostalgia over what simpler their lives were.
Life is always a lot simpler when we reflect from the past. Since we already know what happens in the past, we can see it from different perspectives than we could back when the past was our present.
Basically, the lesson is to create your life that can be reflected on in a nostalgic lens later. Live your life that will make you one day say, “what a time, what a time, what a time”. A life where you laugh and smile through those moments, despite how painful they might have been during that time. That reminiscing moment shows you how much you’ve grown, how far you’ve come, and is that moment of what the human experience is all about.
“Live your life in a way that will make you one day say, “what a time, what a time, what a time”.
